Almost in the foundation document of 21 May 1543 Moritz Duke of Saxony, the founder of the school, wrote that tuition was to be free. By transforming the large real estate of the secularized monastery into a foundation the material independance of the school should be garanteed to allow supporting talented students without regard of their origin, possessions or social status. The system worked until the 20th century, when first the stock of money was lost during the huge inflation of the early 20s and then the real estate, too, due to the Soviet land reform after World War II.
Moritz of Saxony,
the founder of the school.
But the original idea remained, and that is the reason why even today the state of Saxony-Anhalt, by whom at present the school is maintained, supports the school in a generous way, not only by refurbishing the old buildings that have been neglected for decades, but also by reducing the parents′ fee that is at present 3000 Euro a year.
After its revival,
Schulpforta Foundation, too, takes care of the historical buildings and even supports some students by giving scholarships. But meanwhile there are some more supporters and foundations.
